October was all about the pumpkin! The plants that were planted last Spring by our students produced 25 pumpkins - enough for each class to have one. It was a lot of fun work for the Garden Helpers and Garden Club, with plenty of pumpkin seeds to roast and enjoy.
For our Garden Club meeting, we taste tested three kinds of pumpkin pie: a grocery store one, a traditional Libby's pumpkin pie with a box mix crust and a whole wheat, fresh organic pumpkin pie AND three creamy toppings - organic home made whipped cream, canned Redi-Whip and Cool Whip. The grocery store pie was the favorite and all the creamy toppings got a thumbs up! But we did discuss the unpronounceable items in the commercial products and how much sugar things have (about 4 grams = 1 teaspoon) - for instance, one can of Coca-Cola has TEN teaspoons of sugar.
