The rains have finally arrived. Our existing trees and plants in the Nature Center had been suffering from the drought. Just a few inches of rain and things spring to life! The Ribes indecorum (White Flowered Currant) is beginning to bloom and the wildflower seeds are sprouting. The many newly installed plants will get their roots firmly in the ground this winter if things remain cool and damp. Much of the issue that California Native Plants have is too much water at the wrong time of year - they have evolved to be DROUGHT DECIDUOUS. Which simply means that when it is hot and dry, they loose their leaves and sleep. Like us, it isn't good for them to be fed and watered just before bed, especially not heavily! In nature, many of them grow on rocky and erosive soil, not conducive to the soil fungi that kill them in our home gardens.
