The Garden Helpers were rewarded for their hard work all year by having beautiful flowers to give to their mothers for Mother's Day!

April was unseasonably warm and so the spring vegetables suffered. Perhaps I should say that we suffered! The animals and vegetables did what was natural for them as the weather warms up. The wildflowers in the Nature Center went wild. Cool season things, such as lettuce, beets, radishes and carrots either stopped growing or began to bolt (the process of flowering and setting seed) and the aphids and Harlequin Bug attacked our broccoli early. Grapes, pumpkins, apples, and peaches appeared early - we hope there will be no unseasonable cold weather or all will be lost! Fortunately the tropical orchard enjoyed the warm weather and began to set fruit - mango, guava, cherimoya and persimmon. The goldfinches discovered the ripening sunflower seeds and a not-too-bright turtle laid it's eggs in a completely inappropriate place!. Cat found a cool place to hang out and our students continued mulching and planting and eating. They studied in the Nature Center, planted seeds that will be sold at the Environmental Festival, and made "Welcome to the Garden" signs for the Garden. They harvested, weeded and cleaned out the stinky turtle ponds. All in all a very productive month! |
