It was time to put the summer garden to rest - our students cleared out the old tomato, pepper, eggplants etc. and returned them to the earth via our compost bin. Thanks to our friends at Kellogg Garden Products, we replenished the raised beds and began covering a former weed patch with cardboard and mulch. Through the generosity and support of Kaiser Permanente, downey, it will become our tropical/subtropical orchard.
So far, the Garden Helpers and Garden Club have planted peas, four types of carrots, two kinds of red onions, two kinds of bunching onions, four varieties of lettuce, spinach, two varieties of radishes, two types of beets and eight kinds of garlic. And it's just the beginning of the season!!! There will be many more vegetables to come.
