January is not very winter-like in Southern California! Under clear blue skies our Garden Club and Garden Helpers raked up the ash tree leaves and moved them to the Nature Center to serve as mulch. The mulch will suppress weeds and make them easy to pull out. It will help with water evaporation - something they all know about from Mr. Zawacki's lessons - and eventually become compost and thus, food for our plants. But what is a pile of leaves REALLY for, except to play in?!
